Bed milling machines
Bed-type milling machines are mainly used for machining large and heavy workpieces. The weight of the workpiece as well as the machining forces that occur are absorbed by the rigid machine bed, so that only very small positional deviations can occur in the bed slide. In bed-type milling machines, the movement of the three coordinate axes is divided between the table, milling slide and milling unit. The longitudinal movement is performed by the machine table, the transverse movement by the milling slide and the vertical movement by the milling unit. Bed-type milling machines do not have a height-adjustable table; for this reason, the headstock in the machine column takes over the height adjustment of the milling spindle. The major advantages of a bed-type milling machine are its increased static and dynamic rigidity, optimum absorption of cutting forces and a large working area.
Portal milling machines
Portal milling machines are particularly suitable for machining large surfaces - for example, for face milling large panels. The very rigid design of these milling machines enables very high positioning accuracy. A major advantage of portal milling machines is their insensitivity to vibrations, which enables the production of workpieces with high dimensional accuracy, surface quality and at extreme cutting rates. The name "portal milling machine" comes from the portal-like design of this machine tool: here, the milling head is guided on a crossbeam between two machine uprights. Depending on the design of the portal milling machine, the workpiece is clamped on a permanently installed platen or on a machine table that can be moved through the portal.
Boring mills
Boring mill is a universal machine mainly used for machining extensive machine parts. In most cases, this machine tool operates in the horizontal direction. In this case, depending on the design of the machine, the main headstock is attached to a fixed or movable column so that it can be moved vertically. Accordingly, the spindle can only be moved in a single axis, the vertical Z axis. All other directions of movement are performed by the workpiece holder. The work table of boring mills can be moved in the X and Y axes by means of several slides and spindle drives. The great advantage of a boring mill over multi-axis milling machines is its enormous rigidity. For this reason, these large machine tools are popular for machining massive milled parts where a high degree of precision is required. These include, for example, parts of large generators or components for ship engines.
